We continue our look at the winter leagues by heading out of the country. The Caribbean Leagues are home to four different offseason leagues. The Venezuelan, Mexican, Dominican and Puerto Rican Leagues.
Let’s start with a quick glance at the Mexican, Dominican and Puerto Rican leagues where there are currently only four Mariners prospects playing.
In the Mexican League (Liga Mexicana del Pacifico), James Gilheeney is playing for the Naranjeros de Hermosillo. In six starts, Gilheeney is 2-2 with a 2.37 ERA. He’s allowed 25 H over 30.1 IP, striking out 21 and walking five. The Mexican League runs through December.
The Dominican Winter League features three Mariners. Jordy Lara is playing for Aguilas Cibaenas. In 13 games, he’s posted a slash line of .341/.460/.634 with 3 homers and 8 RBI. Ketel Marte – who was recently added to the 40-man roster – has played in eight games for Gigantes del Cibao and is 5-for-24 with a double, three runs scored and two RBI. Julio Morban also plays with Marte. He was 0-for-2 in his first and only game so far. Burt Reynolds is playing for Leones del Escogido. He is 2-for-8 with a run scored in his first three games.
And in the Puerto Rican League, only Emilio Pagan is involved from the Mariners organization. In his first eight appearances out of the bullpen, Pagan has pitched 12.1 innings, striking out 11, with a 2.19 ERA and earning two wins for the Gigantes de Carolina. David Rollins is 1-3 with a 2.53 ERA in seven appearances for Cangrejeros de Santurce. The Puerto Rican League goes through January.
