We continue our look at the winter leagues by heading out of the country. The Caribbean Leagues are home to four different offseason leagues. The Venezuelan, Mexican, Dominican and Puerto Rican Leagues.
Let’s start with a quick glance at the Mexican, Dominican and Puerto Rican leagues where there are currently only four Mariners prospects playing.
In the Mexican League (Liga Mexicana del Pacifico), James Gilheeney is playing for the Naranjeros de Hermosillo. In six starts, Gilheeney is 2-2 with a 2.37 ERA. He’s allowed 25 H over 30.1 IP, striking out 21 and walking five. The Mexican League runs through December.
The Dominican Winter League features two Mariners. Jordy Lara is playing for Aguilas Cibaenas. In seven games, he’s 4-for-19 (.211) with 5 RBI. Two of his four hits have been homers. Ketel Marte – who was recently added to the 40-man roster – was just added to Gigantes del Cibao and was 1-for-3 in his first game with a walk and a strikeout.
And in the Puerto Rican League, only Emilio Pagan is involved from the Mariners organization. In his first six appearances out of the bullpen, Pagan has pitched 10.2 innings, striking out nine, allowing two earned runs and earning two wins for the Gigantes de Carolina. Australian Baseball League
On the other side of the Pacific, they are playing baseball “down under”. I personally would love the opportunity to be a part of a franchise down in Australia, whether covering the teams or running one.
There are two players in the Mariners organization participating in the Australian League, playing for the Adelaide Bite. But before I get to them, there are also a couple of players with Northwest ties of note.
Salem, Oregon native Joey Wong (Sprague High School / Oregon State University) is a member of the Perth Heat. The 24th-round pick in the 2009 draft by the Colorado Rockies played for the team’s Double-A affiliate in 2014.
Portland, Oregon native Rocky Gale (North Salem High School / University of Portland) is on the Adelaide Bite with the members of the M’s organization. The 24th-round pick of the 2010 draft by the San Diego Padres, spent 2014 in Triple-A El Paso.
As for the Mariners:
Will Mathis was the Mariners’ 25th-round pick in the 2013 Draft out of New Mexico. Mathis spent 2014 in High Desert going 5-8 with a 4.86 ERA. His line so far in Australia: 5 G, 7 IP, 9 H, 7 ER, 5 BB, 4 K, 9.00 ERA, .321 BAA, 2.00 WHIP.
Troy Scott was the 18th-round pick by Seattle in the 2013 Draft out of Riverside Community College in California. Scott made one appearance at Class A (Short) Everett (3 IP, 4 H, 3 ER) before finishing with Pulaski (Rookie ball) where he went 2-3 with a 4.57 ERA in 10 games, allowing six homers in 41.1 IP. His Australian line so far: 2 G, 2.1 IP, BB, K, 0.00 ERA, .000 BAA, 0.43 WHIP.
