High Desert Mavericks

The Mavericks have been the epitome of mediocre so far. After a 34-36 First Half, they have started 19-23 in part two of the season. Like the LumberKings, home struggles have been a key factor in a less than stellar record, as the Mavs are 7-14 at Heritage Field.

Getting swept at home against Visalia and Lancaster to extend the home losing streak to eight (yet to be broken) were last month’s low points. Now that DJ Peterson and Patrick Kivlehan have moved up, the hype around the Mavericks is all about Gabby Guerrero.

After representing the Mariners at the Futures Game, he has kept his season average over .300 and has supplemented his power stats over the last ten games by hitting two homers and three doubles.

The best hitter on the team, though, has been Jordy Lara. Over the course of 102 games, he posted a mind-boggling .353/.413/.609 slash line with 22 bombs. He was promoted last week to AA Jackson, where he is hitting a pedestrian .190, albeit in only 22 AB.

Pitching stats are always inflated for the Mavericks, and nobody with more than 5 starts has a sub-5.00 ERA. Matt Brazis, though, overcame the elevation in 23 relief appearances, earning an early July promotion to the Generals. In 17.1 IP at AA, he has a tremendous 1.04 ERA.
