In what seemed eerily similar to their first loss of the spring, two Mariners relievers struggled and were let down more by some shaky defense as the Mariners fell to the Cleveland Indians 8-5 Wednesday.
The Mariners jumped all over Travis Banwart (a non-roster invitee) for four runs in the first inning. Abraham Almonte led off the game with a solo home run, his first of the spring.
Seattle’s pitching, as has been the case this spring, looked solid. James Paxton, Brandon Maurer and Lucas Luetge pitched the first six innings, allowing only one run (off Maurer) off four hits and one walk.
The wheels came off in the 7th. Luetge gave up a leadoff double to David Adams. Then after getting the first out, Luke Carlin reached on a Carlos Triunfel throwing error. Elliott Johnson and Ryan Rayburn followed that up with a triple and homer respectively.
By the bottom of the 7th, the Indians had tied it up at five.
Danny Farquhar came into the game in the 9th with the score still 5-5. After recording the first out, Joe Wendle reached base on a misplayed ball by Xavier Avery.
Francisco Lindor then broke the tie with a double. An error by Humberto Quintero put Lindor on 3rd. Carlos Moncrief then tripled and a Ryan Rohlinger single put it away for Cleveland.
The Mariners split squads tomorrow and Friday. One group will be at the White Sox Thursday while the other will play at home against the Reds on Friday. Split squad rosters will be available here when available.
