Others make moves, Mariners remain quiet

The biggest news items of the week, involved teams in the AL West, but not the Mariners.

The Detroit Tigers struck with the trade that sent Prince Fielder to the Texas Rangers in exchange for Ian Kinsler.

Then on Friday, the Los Angeles Angels traded Peter Bourjos and Randal Grichuk to the St. Louis Cardinals for David Freese and Fernando Salas.

In free agent signings, the San Francisco Giants signed SP Tim Hudson to a 2-year deal.

The San Diego Padres signed SP Josh Johnson to a 1-year deal.

The Kansas City Royals inked SP Jason Vargas to a 4-year deal.

Mariners add to 40-man roster

The Mariners did make some roster moves, but in a minor way.

They selected the contracts of OF James Jones, OF Stefen Romero, 1B Ji-Man Choi and RP Logan Bawcom, placing them on the 40-man roster, protecting them from the upcoming Rule 5 Draft.

The 40-man roster now stands at 38, hinting at the possibility of the Mariners signing two free agents. Other acquisitions would have to be via trades.

M’s make coaching moves

The Mariners parted ways with pitching coach Carl Willis, re-assigned bullpen coach Jaime Navarro and said goodbye to first base coach Mike Brumley – who took a job with the Cubs.

It is yet to be determined if the Mariners will make more news in coaching hires over the next week or if they will finally get in on the free agents and/or trade market.

But it seems that many of the target pieces are starting to become spoken for. The Mariners better make some moves soon before they are left at the dance without a date once again.
