The Mariners walked off the Oakland A’s Tuesday night at Safeco Field.

The Seattle Mariners stormed back to beat the Oakland A’s, 6-5 on Tuesday night at Safeco Field. Mike Montgomery (2-0, 1.67 ERA) earned the win for the Mariners after hurling 3.1 innings out of the bullpen. Ryan Madson (2-1, 2.66 ERA) was credited with the loss after the blowing the save opportunity in the 9th.

Nate Karns had a bit of a tough time tonight for the Mariners. The 28-year-old right-hander allowed 3 runs on 5 hits through 5 innings of work. Karns racked up 3 punch outs and issued a pair of free passes. Things were moving relatively smoothly until the wheels fell off in the 6th inning. Overall, it wasn’t a terrible outing for Karns, but he wasn’t as sharp as we are used to seeing.

The Mariners got on the scoreboard early this evening, pushing across the game’s first run in the home half of the 1st inning. Seth Smith lined a single into left field to give the M’s their first baserunner. Robinson Cano plated Smitty on a double that sailed over Billy Burns‘ head in center field before lodging itself under the padding of the wall.

Oakland fought back to tie the game in the top of the 3rd inning. Coco Crisp muscled up on an 82-mph knuckle-curve, and smacked it over the wall in over the wall in right field for a solo blast. The round-tripper tied the game at 1.

The tie was short-lived however, as the M’s regained the lead in the bottom of the 3rd. Leonys Martin led off the frame by working a walk, and Smith collected his second single of the game to give Seattle a pair of ducks with none out. Unfortunately, Cano grounded into a twin killing, but Martin was able to advance to third base. Thankfully, Nelson Cruz came through with a 2-out RBI single to make it a 2-1 game.

Unfortunately, that was the high point for the Mariners tonight. The A’s broke the game open in the 6th inning. Stephen Vogt opened the scoring spree with a leadoff single, and he advanced to third base with none out on a Danny Valencia single. Vogt trotted home to tie the game on a Kris Davis sac fly. Yonder Alonso followed with a single, and Marcus Semien gave Oakland the lead with an RBI double. Crisp extended the A’s lead to 5-2 with a 2-run, 2-out double.

Seattle cut into the A’s lead in the bottom of the 8th. Franklin Gutierrez got the rally started by doubling to center field. Cano made up for hitting into the double play earlier by depositing a hanging breaking ball into the seats in right center field. Robbie’s 2-run shot brought the Mariners to within a single run.

Chris Iannetta and Shawn O’Malley were promptly retired leading off the final frame for the Mariners. However, Nori Aoki broke out of his slump by doubling on a soft liner to left field. Next up was the M’s newest power hitter, Leonys Martin. Seattle was down to their final strike before Martin launched a game-winning 2-run home run.
