Mariners go bird hunting in Baltimore

The Seattle Mariners (22-16) started their road trip with a bang, winning 10-0 against the Baltimore Orioles (23-14) on Tuesday night at Camden Yards. Wade Miley (4-2, 4.32 ERA) was brilliant en route to earning the win for the Mariners. Ubaldo Jimenez (2-4, 5.60 ERA) was less than stellar in the losing effort.

The Mariners kicked off the scoring early tonight, pushing across a pair of runs in the opening inning. Seth Smith worked a one-out walk, and Robinson Cano sliced a double to left field. Smitty is not the fastest of runners, and Manny Acta threw up the stop sign at third base on Cano’s double. Nelson Cruz cashed in against his former club, plating Smith and Cano on a single to right field.

The M’s went back to work in the fifth inning, scoring five more runs to effectively put the game out of reach. Nori Aoki came through with a one-out single, and Smith walked to give the Mariners a pair of baserunners. Cano singled home Aoki, and Cruz brought home Smitty on a single of his own. That was it for Jimenez, as he was lifted in favor of Brian Matusz. Kyle Seager welcomed the lefty to the ballgame by belting a three-run blast over the wall in right-center field. Seag’s 8th dinger of the season made it a 7-0 game.

Seattle tacked on even more insurance runs in the top of the sixth. Seth Smith was the rally starter for the M’s tonight, and he did it again in the sixth. The Ole Miss alum ripped a two-out single back through the box into center field. Robbie Cano cashed him in on a double, and Cruz swatted a two-run homer to make it a double digit lead for the Mariners.

Wade Miley no-hit the O’s through the first four innings this evening, and looked very sharp in the process. The bearded southpaw required just 69 pitches to record the first 12 outs of the ballgame. Miley’s no-hit bid was lost in the fifth, but he had very little trouble retiring Oriole hitters tonight. All told, Miley shut out Baltimore across 6 innings while allowing just 2 hits. The only negative was his 1:3 strikeout to walk ratio.

Vidal Nuno was called on to work the seventh inning for Seattle, and the veteran left-hander picked up right where Miley left off. Nuno pitched a pair of perfect innings in relief, striking out 1 and walking none to preserve the M’s slim 10-run lead.

Steve Johnson came on in the ninth, and snuffed the torches of the Orioles to secure the lopsided victory for the Mariners.

Nelson Cruz may have to spend the night in a Baltimore jail cell, because the Boomstick flat out assaulted the Orioles on Tuesday. The 35-year-old went 3 for 3 with a walk, a home run, 2 runs scored and 5 RBI against his former team. Everything about tonight’s game was fun to watch for Mariners’ fans, but Cruz’s remarkable showing was definitely the highlight.

Up next for the Mariners is another date with the AL East leading Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday night at Camden Yards. First pitch is set for 4:10 pm PT tomorrow. Taijuan Walker (2-2, 2.63 ERA) will be charged with winning the series for the Mariners, and Chris Tillman (5-1, 2.58 ERA) will be on the bump for the home side.
