The Seattle Mariners win the series against the Cleveland Indians as Robinson Cano blasts a 3-run home run in the tenth inning.

The Seattle Mariners (7-8) beat the Cleveland Indians (6-7), 10-7 on Thursday morning at rainy Progressive Field.  Todays’s game was the opposite of a pitchers duel, and the Mariners bats had a good day at the plate. Nate Karns (1-1, 5.28 ERA) pitched really well for 4 innings and ran out of gas as he gave up some crooked numbers in the fifth and sixth and got a no decision. Cody Anderson (0-1, 7.53 ERA) did not fare as well lasting just 3.2 innings.  Cody Allen (0-1, 8.53 ERA) would get tagged with the loss in this game and Tony Zych (1-0, 2.89 ERA) would earn the win for the Mariners.  Steve Cishek (3, 1.13 ERA) worked a perfect 10th inning to record his 3rd save of the season.

The Mariners opened the scoring in the second inning on Thursday morning in Cleveland. Adam Lind started it off with a leadoff single, and Steve Clevenger connected for his first Mariners home run. In the fourth inning the Mariners loaded the bases and Nori Aoki came through with a single against Anderson to score Adam Lind.  Seth Smith would hit a sacrifice fly scoring Clevenger.  Reliever Trevor Bauer would come in to relieve Anderson and walk Robinson Cano and Nelson Cruz to score Marte to make it 5-0 Mariners.  In the sixth Nori Aoki was hit by a Bauer pitch and he would score on a Cano double.  Cano would score on a single by Nelson Cruz to make it 7-3 Mariners.

Nate the great Karns gave up a leadoff double to Rajai Davis in the first inning and then proceeded to settle down retiring the next 11 batters in a row with the help of a double play.  However with two outs in the fourth inning gave up a walk and a single but would get out of the jam with a ground ball out.  It seemed like Karns was coasting in this game.  However with one out in the fifth he would allow a walk and a single again, only this time Rajai Davis deposited the ball in the stands for a three run home run.  In the sixth he walked Carlos Santana and Jose Ramirez doubled down the left field line to score him.

Nick Vincent would replace Karns and give up a single to right field to Lonnie Chisenhall that would score Ramirez.  Ramirez belonged to Karns, so Karns would go 5.1 innings and allow five hits and five runs, four of which were earned.  He gave up four walks and got five strikeouts.  Vincent did his job and retired the next two batters to end the inning.  Joel Peralta had a quiet seventh inning on the mound for the Mariners giving up only a single.  Joaquin Benoit walked Marlon Byrd in the eighth and then gave up a two run home run to pinch hitter Mike Napoli to relinquish the lead and tie the game 7-7.

The game would go into extra innings and in the tenth inning, with Cody Allen pitching, Steve Clevenger and Franklin Gutierrez walked.  Then Robinson Cano greeted Allen’s first pitch fast ball with his mighty lumber for a three run home run over the 400-foot marker in center field.  This would prove to be the game winner.

Robinson Cano would have quite a day going 3 for 5 with 4 RBI including a 3 run home run to win the game.  Cano who had his hitting streak ended yesterday with an 0-4 day, is back at it.  He now has 6 home runs and is batting .246.  Steve Clevenger also had a terrific game for the Mariners as he had his first Mariners home run and went 2-4 at the plate and also threw out Francisco Lindor the Cleveland Indians quick shortstop trying to steal second base.  Outside of the home run that Benoit gave up, the Mariners bullpen did very well.
