The Seattle Mariners lose their second game in a row as Felix has a rough first inning in his last start of spring training.

The Seattle Mariners (15-14-2) lost to the San Diego Padres (10-19-2) 5-7 Wednesday afternoon in Peoria, AZ.  Tyson Ross (1-2, 7.71 ERA) earned the win for the Padres, and Felix Hernandez (0-2, 4.11 ERA) was saddled with the loss for the Mariners.

Felix really only struggled in the first inning giving up 4 runs, 3 of which were earned.  After Felix walked Cory Spangenberg, Matt Kemp doubled to score him.  Next, Wil Myers singled.  Then Yangervis Solarte reached on a fielding error by Dae-ho Lee and Kemp scored.  Derek Norris extended the inning with a double that scored two more.

Felix was slated to pitch only two innings as this would be his last start before Opening Day.  However after giving up just a single in the second inning, he came back out in the third inning and was able to do what he wanted by getting all three batters out consecutively.  Felix noted that he is not worried about statistics in Spring Training.  He is merely worried about getting ready for the regular season.  That’s when it counts.

Blake Parker would take the mound in the fourth inning for the Mariners.  Melvin Upton Jr. tripled and the pitcher for the Padres, Tyson Ross singled him in.  Mike Montgomery would take the ball in the fifth inning.  Matt Kemp welcomed him with a base hit to right field but was quickly thrown out at second by Nelson Cruz as Kemp attempted to stretch it to a double.  Tony Zych took the hill in the sixth inning and allowed two singles but was able to work his way out of the jam.  Zych hit the leadoff batter and then gave up a two run home run to Adam Rosales.  Ryne Harper pitched the 8th inning and other than allowing two walks got three outs.  Andrew Kittredge pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

Just before the game the Mariners announced that they had optioned Mayckol Guaipe down to Tacoma.

The Mariners offense perked up a little today.  In the first inning Luis Sardinas singled to left field and scored on a double by Nelson Cruz.  That would be all the Mariners would get off of Tyson Ross who had a very good outing.  However, the Mariners would begin to chip away at the lead off of former Mariner Brandon Morrow.  Morrow would load the bases and allow Efren Navarro to score on a ground ball out to Luis Sardinas.

Carlos Villanueva pitched a 1-2-3 7th inning against the Mariners.  In the 8th inning the Padres sent Richland, Washington native Eric Yardley to the mound to face the Mariners.  The Mariners started off well with a single by Ketel Marte and a walk by Ed Lucas.  But Yardley would get a double play to slow the Mariners down.  Austin Wilson then got an RBI single to left field before Yardley could close out the inning.

Josh Martin took the hill against the Mariners in the 9th and gave up a 2 RBI double to hot hitting Dan Robertson.  Robertson has really shined for the Mariners this spring.  He’s batting .400 this spring.
