Wade Miley allows a pair of long balls and the offense can’t bail him out as Mariners fall to Tribe.

The Seattle Mariners (9-11-2) lost to the Cleveland Indians (9-10) 3-1 today at Peoria Stadium. Wade Miley (0-1, 5.40) was credited for the loss this afternoon for Seattle, and TJ House earned the win for the Indians (1-1, 5.59).

Miley had trouble with the long ball in his third start of the spring. He lasted 5 innings, allowing 3 runs on 4 hits including a pair of homeruns. In the first inning, Miley allowed a solo homerun to Jose Ramirez, giving the Indians an early 1-0 lead. After throwing a perfect second inning, Miley allowed a leadoff double to Michael Martinez in the top of the third, followed by Ramirez’s second homerun of the day to stretch the Cleveland lead to 3-0.

Miley sent the Indians down in order again in the top of the fourth and came out with a scoreless fifth for his final inning of work. Meanwhile, the Mariners offense struggled to put anything together. Through 5, the M’s had only scrounged up 3 hits.

Steve Cishek came in to pitch for the Mariners and threw a perfect top of the sixth. Mayckol Guaipe pitched the seventh and eighth innings for the M’s and retired all 6 batters he faced. Casey Coleman came out to throw the 9th and walked one, but only faced the minimum as Rob Brantly threw out Collin Cowgill trying to steal.

In the bottom of the seventh, the M’s finally got on the board. Dae-Ho Lee led off the inning being hit by a pitch and a pair of passed balls advanced Lee to third. With 2 outs, Dan Robertson drove him in with an RBI single. The M’s were sent down in order in the eighth and all they could work up in the ninth was a walk by Shawn O’Malley.

The overall story today was the homerun. Cleveland only had 4 hits, unfortunately 2 of those hits went over the fence. Seth Smith was 1-2 today, and is now hitting .542 this spring. Luis Sardinas also had a hit, going 1-3, and is batting .359 this spring as he battles for the utility infielder position. Kyle Seager is hitting .314 this spring after going 1-4 today, playing all 9 innings.

On a side note, the Mariners made a few cuts to the roster in camp. Pitchers Jonathan Aro and David Rollins as well as catcher Steve Baron were optioned to Tacoma. Adrian Sampson and Ed Lucas were sent to minor league camp. Today’s cuts leave 40 players still in the big league camp as of now.
