10. 62. 22. 14. Final

Fresh off winning 15-1 in the series opener on Friday night, the Boston Red Sox (52-64) thrashed the Seattle Mariners (54-63) again on Saturday afternoon. It was football score today, as the BoSox won 22-10 at Fenway Park. Wade Miley (9-9, 4.58 ERA) was credited with the easiest win he has had since little league. Felix Hernandez (14-7, 3.65 ERA) was pitiful, and took the loss for the M’s.

Boston hung a 5 spot on the M’s to get the scoring started in the home half of the 2nd inning. Seattle clawed back with 2 runs in the top of the 3rd, but another 5-run bottom half put a damper on things. It was all Boston after that, as they plated 22 runs as a team and combined to tally 26 hits. The Mariners made a late charge, scoring 6 runs over the final 2 innings, but it was too little too late.

Despite the high win total, Felix Hernandez has not been himself this season, and Saturday’s outing was one of the worst of his 10-year career. The Sox rebelled against the King, scoring 10 runs on 12 hits while cracking 3 home runs across 2.1 innings of work. The 10 earned runs represent a new career high for Hernandez. He struck out 2, issued 1 free pass and plunked Pablo Sandoval on the elbow. Hernandez actually looked scared to throw his signature changeup, and that sums up how poorly things went today.

Danny Farquhar did a great job pitching in relief for Seattle considering his unique circumstances. Farquhar was recalled from Tacoma late last night, and red-eyed it to Boston in time to make the 1:35 pm local start time. The 28-year-old righty allowed 1 run on 3 hits through 2.2 innings this afternoon. Joe Beimel coughed up 4 runs on 0.1 innings, and Rob Rasmussen allowed 4 runs of his own in 0.2 innings. Tom Wilhelmsen hurled a scoreless 7th inning for Seattle. Backup catcher, Jesus Sucre was forced to make his second relief appearance of the season for the M’s. Sucre showed off a nice 90 mph fastball, but surrendered 3 runs on 5 hits in the 8th.

Not surprisingly, Nelson Cruz led the way offensively for Seattle. Cruz finished 2 for 3 with a home run, 2 walks and 3 RBI. The 35-year-old extended his on base streak to a career high 26 games. Austin Jackson came through with a home run and 3 RBI for the M’s today. Mike Zunino snapped an 0-25 skid, finishing 2 for 4 with a home run, 2 runs scored and a RBI. Ketel Marte also had a nice day, contributing an RBI double to the Mariners’ cause.

Wade Miley pitched 7 strong innings for the Red Sox, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits while striking out 8 and walking 3. To be fair, there was very little pressure on Miley to pitch well considering the lopsided score. The Sox’s bullpen was lit up, allowing 8 runs on 9 hits across 3 innings as a group. Ryan Cook was the worst of the bunch, allowing 5 runs in 0.2 innings.

Jackie Bradley Jr. set the tone on offense for the Red Sox. Known more for his defensive prowess than his bat, Bradley shocked the M’s by clubbing a pair of home runs, 3 doubles and tallying 7 RBI. Xander Bogaerts had a 4-hit day, as did rookie backstop Blake Swihart. David Ortiz, Brock Holt and Mookie Betts had 3 hits a piece. Travis Shaw was the only member of the Red Sox starting 9 not to have a hit today.

The Red Sox have taken out a season worth of frustration on the visiting Mariners this weekend. The Sox have scored a remarkable 37 runs on 47 hits since the series began on Friday night. The most shocking aspect has to be that all this occurred immediately after the M’s won three consecutive series and Hisashi Iwakuma pitched a no-hitter on Wednesday. If you are keeping score at home, the last couple games are the new low point of the Mariners’ train wreck 2015 season. I would not be surprised to see Lloyd McClendon get fired in the coming days.

Today’s catastrophic meltdown means that Seattle has plunged even further in the American League West. The Mariners now sit 9.5 game back of the division leading Houston Astros, and a full 7 games out of the wildcard.

The Seattle Mariners (54-63) will hope to salvage their dignity Sunday afternoon in the series finale with the Boston Red Sox (52-64). First pitch is scheduled for 10:35 am PST from historic Fenway Park. Vidal Nuno (0-1, 3.00 ERA) will likely have trouble sleeping tonight as he gets ready to face the suddenly potent Sox lineup. Henry Owens (1-1, 3.60 ERA) will get the ball for the home side tomorrow afternoon. Root Sports Northwest will carry the game live locally, and MLB.tv subscribers can watch worldwide on connected devices.
