Seattle Mariners Winter League Update

The 2014 season is over for the Seattle Mariners. But the season is just underway for several players in the Mariners organization at the various Winter Leagues around the world.

The Arizona Fall League, Venezuelan Baseball League and Mexican Pacific League are underway with several others getting underway in the next few weeks.

The Mariners typically of players playing in most of the available leagues. Currently they have players in both Arizona and Venezuela.

Each Sunday, we will update you on their progress, inform you of breakout performances and help you to better get to know some of these prospects who may or may not one day make their way to Seattle.

We start with the players in Arizona.

Arizona Fall League

The Surprise Saguaros are off to a 3-2 start and leading the AFL West Division. The Saguaros are comprised of prospects from the Rangers, Reds, Red Sox, Padres and Mariners.

The opening game of the season, had a very distinctive Mariners feel to it as Taijuan Walker pitched solid to start the game, Patrick Kivlehan homered to give Surprise the lead, then Stephen Landazuri blew the save.

Here is a look at the stats of the seven Mariners players on the roster.

John Hicks: .375/.444/.500, 2 G, 2B, 2 RBI, BB

Patrick Kivlehan: .235/.350/.647, 4 G, 4 R, 2B, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 2 BB, K

D.J. Peterson: .333/.538/.444, 3 G, R, 2B, RBI, 4 BB

Matt Anderson: 2 G, 3 IP, 3 H, R, ER, 3K, 3.00 ERA, .250 BAA, 1.00 WHIP

Matt Brazis: 1 G, 1 IP, BS, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, K, 1-0, 18.00 ERA, .500 BAA, 4.00 WHIP

Stephen Landazuri: 2 G, 3 IP, BS, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 1-1, 12.00 ERA, .400 BAA, 2.67 WHIP

Taijuan Walker: 1 GS, 4 IP, 5 H, R, ER, 5 K, 2.25 ERA, .294 BAA, 1.25 WHIP

Liga Venezuela Beisbol Profesional (Venezuelan League)

The Seattle Mariners have six different players on four separate teams in the Venezuelan League. Let’s take a look at the stats after the first few games of the season.

Tigres de Aragua

Ji-Man Choi and Kyle Hunter are on the Tigres. Choi is batting .333 in his first four games of the season with three runs scored, a homer, 2 RBI and 3 BB.

Kyle Hunter has pitched 1.1 IP so far with 2 K and has yet to allow a run or give up a hit.

Cardenales de Lara

Gabriel Noriega is batting .357 in his first four games with two runs scored, a triple and 3 RBI. He also has struck out four times in 14 at-bats.

Bravos de Margarita

Manny Pina is batting .286 with a double and a run scored in his first two games with the Bravos.

Moises Hernandez has only pitched 0.2 IP and allowed three hits a three runs, including a homer, for an ERA of 40.50.

Caribes de Anzoategui

Mayckol Guaipe has a 2.45 ERA in his first 3.2 IP. He’s allowed two hits, two walks and one earned run while striking out one.
