Mariners Announce Minor League Awards

Seattle Mariners minor leaguers D.J. Peterson and Jordy Lara were named the 2014 Mariners Minor League Co-Players of the Year on Friday, as the organization handed out their annual Minor League awards.

Peterson, a third baseman, was the Mariners first-round pick in the 2013 First-Year Player Draft. Peterson split time between Class-A High Desert and Jackson, batting .297 with 31 HR and 111 RBI in 123 games.

Lara, a first baseman/outfielder, also split time between the two clubs, batting .337 with 26 HR and 104 RBI.

Patrick Kivlehan, another 1B/OF who split time between those same two clubs, received the Minor League Unsung Hero Award.

Kivlehan, the Mariners 4th round selection in the 2012 draft, batted .295 with 20 HR and 103 RBI.

Other Mariners Minor League award winners included: SS Ketel Marte (Double-A Jackson and Triple-A Tacoma) who received the Heart and Soul Award. Jordan Pries (Tacoma) and Edwin Diaz (Class A Clinton) were named Co-Starting Pitchers of the Year and Matt Brazis (High Desert and Jackson) was named the Minor League Relief Pitcher of the Year.

Pries was 10-8 with a 3.86 ERA for the Rainiers this season. Diaz was 6-8 with a 3.33 ERA in Clinton. Brazis was 4-1 with 2.36 ERA and six saves between High Desert and Jackson.
