Mariners Can’t Push Across Runs, Lose Tough One To Oakland
The Mariners, despite a 7-hit effort, couldn’t push a run across despite numerous opportunities, dropping the rubber match to the Oakland Athletics 4-0.
Because of the loss, the Mariners are 2.5 games back of Oakland in the Wild Card, and 1 game back of the Kansas City Royals for the 2nd Wild Card spot.
In a game where Chris Young pitched 6.0 innings of 2-run ball, the Mariners could not find the hits they needed to drive in runs.
The team was an absurd 0-for-13 with runners in scoring position while also leaving 11 men on-base over the course of the 9 inning contest. Kendrys Morales alone went 0-for-3 while leaving 6 men on-base.
And even though the Mariners managed four stolen bases (2 from Austin Jackson, 1 from Chris Denorfia, and 1 from Chris Taylor), nothing was doing when it came to getting to home plate.
Oakland’s Jon Lester went 6 innings of shutout ball while striking out 7 and walking 4. He was the king of damage control at Safeco.
The Mariners have unfortunately gone 2-4 on the homestand, and are fortunate to remain only 0.5 games back of a Wild Card spot.
Some serious regrouping needs to come in the coming days.
