Rangers Keep Mariners Bats Quiet, Avoid The Sweep

facebooktwitterreddit

Adrian Beltre hit a sacrifice fly off James Paxton in the 6th inning and the Texas Rangers made it hold as they avoided the sweep and beat the Seattle Mariners 1-0 on Sunday.

Paxton and Derek Holland exchanged blows for six and seven innings respectively. Paxton scattered five hits and struck out three while Holland allowed six hits and struck out five while walking none.

Despite 2-for-4 days from both Austin Jackson and Robinson Cano, the Mariners could not hit runners around. The Mariners had the tying runner on in each of the final three innings, but couldn’t push them across.

The Mariners had runners at 1st and 3rd with only one out in the 9th against Neftali Feliz. But James Jones popped out to short and Justin Smoak flew out to left to end it.

The loss snaps the five game winning streak for the Mariners. The M’s are one game up on the Detroit Tigers for the 2nd AL wild-card spot. The Tigers play the San Francisco Giants on Sunday Night Baseball.

The M’s now return home to Safeco to take on the Houston Astros in a three-game series that starts Monday.
