Hisashi Iwakuma Gets Felix’d, Mariners Can’t Solve Chris Tillman

Hisashi Iwakuma gave up a home run to Nick Markakis to lead off the game and the Seattle Mariners couldn’t get it back off Chris Tillman as the Orioles took the rubber match of the three-game series, 1-0 Sunday afternoon.

Iwakuma hadn’t lost a road start since July 20, 2013, going 9-0 with a 2.17 ERA in 14 starts away from Safeco. And Sunday wasn’t much different. After the leadoff homer to Markakis, ‘Kuma settled in allowing only four more hits and two walks while striking out seven over 7.2 IP.

On the other side, was Chris Tillman. Tillman improved to 6-0 with a 2.03 ERA in six career starts against the Mariners, the team that dealt him in 2008 as part of the Adam Jones/Erik Bedard trade.

Tillman scattered four singles across seven shutout innings, walking none and striking out six.

The closest the Mariners came was in the top of the second when they had runners at the corners with only one out. But Tillman got Mike Zunino and Brad Miller to both go down on strikes to end the threat. He then retired 12 more in a row before giving up a leadoff hit to Kendrys Morales in the 7th.

Sunday’s game marked the 14th time the Mariners have been shut out this season and the third time they lost 1-0.

The Mariners finished up the road trip at 3-3 and return to Safeco for a nine-game homestand that opens Tuesday with a two-game Interleague series against the Atlanta Braves.
