Mariners Score Two In 12th, Hold On To Beat Angels

facebooktwitterreddit

The Seattle Mariners didn’t want to go 16 innings again. With runs at a premium for a second night, Kyle Seager, Logan Morrison and Justin Smoak decided that enough was enough.

Morrison’s double scored Seager who led off the 12th with a double and Morrison scored on a single by Smoak. That actually turned out to be the winning run as the Angels got one back in the bottom of the 12th but still lost to the M’s 3-2.

Felix Hernandez and Garrett Richards gave us the pitching matchup I predicted in the gameday preview. Felix allowed only two hits and one unearned run in seven innings, striking out nine but walked an un-Felix-like four batters.

Richards was up to the task going eight innings allowing only three hits, one run and one walk while fanning seven.

Dominic Leone, who took the loss in Friday’s 16-inning marathon, got the win Saturday but made it interesting. After pitching a solid 11th, Leone came back in for the 12th with the 3-1 lead and gave up a leadoff homer to David Freese to make it 3-2.

Charlie Furbush then came in and set the Angels down in order to earn his first career save (Fernando Rodney was used in the 10th inning).

In the past two days, the Mariners and Angels have played 9 hours and 21 minutes of baseball Both of their pitching staffs have thrown a total of 779 pitches in 28 innings. Lucky, the teams are coming off the All-Star break and are presumably rested.

The Mariners now sit eight games behind Oakland in the AL West and two games ahead of Cleveland for the 2nd AL Wild-Card. The M’s look to take the series Sunday with Chris Young on the hill.
