Corey Hart Recalled, Cole Gillespie DFA'd

According to numerous sources on Twitter today, Corey Hart has been activated from the disabled list while outfielder Cole Gillespie has been designated for assignment. From Ryan Divish at the Seattle Times:

It seems that Dustin Ackley‘s quick 6 hits to start the month of July have kept him in the Mariners uniform for the foreseeable future, with Gillespie being the odd man out.

With this move the Mariners now carry 4 legitimate outfielders in Ackley, James Jones, Michael Saunders, and Endy Chavez. Logan Morrison can get time in right field as well.

Gillespie has been taken off the 40-man roster, and in the following 10 days the Mariners need to make one of these contractual moves:

1: Place Gillespie on waivers (which must be done in the first 7 days of the 10 day period)

2: Trade Gillespie

3: release Gillespie

4: outright Gillespie from the 40-man roster into the Minor Leagues.

Are you happy about the move? Do you think Gillespie was the right man to take off of the roster?

And a Happy 4th from all of us at Sodo Mojo, enjoy the game in Chicago at 4:10 PM Pacific!

Would of like to have seen a little more of him play especially when Ackerly was struggling, Gillespies has been around for awhile but has not stuck with anyone, I think given more of an opportunity not unlike Saunders or Smoak,.. and who else can you name,.. might of finally figure things out, unfortunately he was apart of a numbers game.

They are the logical moves to make at this point. Smoak should not get recalled until he shows he can hit, he still has an option available. Hart has shown he can hit and play ball, time to earn his paycheck. Gillespie was the least likely to be claimed off of wavers, although I hope he clears and goes to Tacoma, he’s a decent depth piece. It was probably down to him or Romero and Romero has more potential lang term value.

I believe Romero is already at Tacoma. He hit a homer today. I believe the M’s are going with an extra relief pitcher at the moment. I am not sure why, unless they are trying to trade one. Having only three bench players can be rough… If you just meant Romero or Gillespie dropping from the 40 man, I would agree with you.

Send Gillespie down to Tacoma. We know he can hit, he has some value.
