Felix Hernandez Returns The Favor, One Hits Indians
By Dan Hughes
A day after being one-hit by the Cleveland Indians, Felix Hernandez allowed only one hit to the Tribe over 8 IP while striking out nine as the Seattle Mariners took the rubber match Sunday 3-0.
Robinson Cano provided the offense, breaking out of a mini-slump, with a 2-run homer in the 6th. He would add another hit and later score in the 8th. Fernando Rodney pitched a perfect 9th for his 23rd save, which is tied for the American League lead.
The Mariners collected 10 hits a day after being held to one as every starter but Stefen Romero collected at least one hit – Kyle Seager and Cano had two. Romero was optioned back to Triple-A Tacoma after the game to make room for Taijuan Walker who will start today in Houston.
It was the 10th win of the season for Hernandez as he lowered his ERA to 2.10, tied with Masahiro Tanaka for tops in the AL. It was the first time the Mariners had one-hit an opponent since Hernandez and Steve Delabar did it to the Twins May 5, 2012.
