Derek Jeter Scores Winning Run On Night Mariners Honor Him

facebooktwitterreddit

Before the game, the Seattle Mariners honored Derek Jeter who is retiring after this season. During the game, Jeter reached base three times and scored twice, including the eventual winning run as the Yankees took Game 1 of the three-game series 3-2.

The Yankees jumped on Hisashi Iwakuma for two runs in the first inning. The Mariners were able to get one back in the bottom of the 1st and tied it up in the 7th on a Dustin Ackley RBI single.

In the top of the 8th, Jacoby Ellsbury singled off Iwakuma to put the Yanks up for good.

Iwakuma threw a season-high 108 pitches, in fact, it was the first time he went over 100 this season. In retrospect, it appears that he should have stayed under 100.

The battle doesn’t get any easier as the Yankees send Masahiro Tanaka to the hill Wednesday. The Mariners counter with Chris Young.

Other Notes:

Earlier Tuesday, the Mariners announced that they had taken Taijuan Walker off the disabled list and had outrighted him to Triple-A Tacoma.

With the successful start by Erasmo Ramirez against Tampa Bay, the club appears to be willing to let Ramirez make at least one more start while Walker gets ready in Tacoma.

As of now, Ramirez is slated to pitch Saturday against Texas. If he has a good start, he may get one more. If he gets shelled, we may see Walker make his 2014 debut June 19th in San Diego.
