Seattle Mariners Beat Atlanta Braves, Win 4th In A Row

John Buck‘s two-run homer off Alex Wood in the top of the 7th broke a 5-5 tie and the bullpen held serve as the Seattle Mariners went down to Atlanta and beat the Braves 7-5.

The win – the 4th in a row for Seattle – coupled with losses by the Angels and Rangers move Seattle ahead of the Rangers into 3rd place in the AL West, 0.5 games back of the Angels for 2nd.

Erasmo Ramirez was called up from Triple-A Tacoma to make the start for Seattle in place of Brandon Maurer, who had been sent back to Tacoma last week. After the first inning, M’s fans were reminded why Seattle sent Ramirez down to Tacoma in the first place.

The Braves jumped on Ramirez for four runs in the first, including a 3-run homer by Evan Gattis. They added another on a B.J. Upton homer in the bottom of the 2nd after the Mariners had scored two in the top half.

Ramirez only pitched three innings, allowing five runs on eight hits. The bullpen took over from there and proved why they are one of the best groups in baseball right now.

Tom Wilhelmsen, Dominic Leone, Danny Farquhar and Fernando Rodney pitched six shutout innings allowing only two hits while striking out nine.

On the flip side, the Mariners got to Gavin Floyd for the two runs in the second and then added three in the 4th when Lloyd McClendon pinch hit for Ramirez with Stefen Romero. Romero belted a three-run homer that tied the game at 5-5.

The short two-game series concludes Wednesday with a matinee game.
