This off season the Mariners bid farewell to first baseman/DH Kendrys Morales. People were skeptical of why Jack Zduriencik didn’t re-sign Morales, since he hit 23 home runs and drove in 80 runs.
Then when they found out that Morales rejected a one year $14.1 million dollar offer they changed their opinion on Morales. Oh yeah, I also forgot to mention that Morales did state that he would love to sign a multi-year deal worth……get this, between $50-$60 million dollars.
My first thought was “Is Morales high?” Honestly, Morales was out of his freakin mind if he thought teams would pay an overweight 30 year old man with a bum leg, who cant run, $50-$60 million dollars.
But now things have changed. Not just for the Mariners but for the Texas Rangers.
That’s right, the Rangers are in need of a 1B/DH now that Prince Fielder will be out for the season.
Fielder is expected to undergo surgery next Tuesday to repair a herniated disk in his neck and will miss the rest of the season.
The Rangers now have 14 players that are on the DL and could make a move towards Morales. But his agent again is asking for a multi-year deal and signing Morales would cost the Rangers the 30th overall pick in next month’s First-Year Player Draft.
Now you’re probably wondering why the Mariners would be in the same discussion of signing Morales? First of all Corey Hart is out currently with a strained left hamstring that’s going to sideline him for 4-6 weeks.
Second, Logan Morrison still isn’t back from his hamstring injury. And finally, the Mariners could sign him just to keep him away from Texas.
Morales can fit in both teams’ lineups, but again there is the problem of Morales’ agent Scott Boras asking for a multi-year deal.
If he wants both him and Morales to get paid then he’s going to have to settle with a one year deal since both teams are not looking for a couple years with Morales, just the remainder of the season.
Its going to be very interesting to see where Morales will land a deal, my guess is that Texas will be his new home.
