Jason Hammel- Chicago Cubs

I know what you are thinking. “Dan, why do the Mariners want a starting pitcher?” The answer is, why wouldn’t they? Felix Hernandez has had some struggles of late, Hisashi Iwakuma has looked terrific but missed time to start the year. James Paxton and Taijuan Walker have both missed significant time already. Brandon Maurer is a mess as is Erasmo Ramirez.

Blake Beavan is hurt, Chris Young has been getting better with every start but could have issues at any moment. Roenis Elias is a rookie who could hit a wall late in the year. If the team is seriously going to contend for a playoff spot, they need some help in the back end of the rotation.

And while Hammel may not be the only pitcher the Cubs look to deal, (Jeff Samardzija) he has had some early success in 2014 (4-1, 2.45 ERA) and may be the best available option on the market come trade deadline.

Again, a move involving Nick Franklin and a pitching prospect (Matt Anderson?) could get this deal done.
