Mariners Bullpen Blows Lead, Winning Streak Snapped

It was a short-lived streak. For only the 2nd time this season, the Mariners had a three-game winning streak. And for a while there, it appeared as if the Mariners were going to have their first four-game win streak of the season. But Yoervis Medina and Charlie Furbush had other ideas.

Medina blew a 4-3 lead in the 8th and Furbush failed to record an out in the 11th as the Houston Astros beat the Mariners 5-4 Friday night.

Felix Hernandez threw five innings and turned a 4-3 lead over to the Mariners bullpen. Tom Wilhelmsen, Joe Beimel and Dominic Leone  held serve for the first 2 IP, but the Funky Yoe Medina gave up a run in the 8th to tie it. The Astros bullpen held to force extra innings.

Danny Farquhar came in for the 9th and 10th, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out four. But for some reason (pitch count?) Furbush came in for the 11th. He failed to record a single out. Four batters came to the plate, four batters reached base, scoring the winning run. It took all of 13 pitches.

In a bit of good news, the Mariners welcome back Hisashi Iwakuma tomorrow in hopes of getting back in the win column. Let’s welcome ‘Kuma to the 2014 season. We’ll get ’em tomorrow.
