Mariners Notes

  • Obviously the biggest news this week is that Robinson Cano is returning to Yankee stadium for the first time since signing that gigantic contract this past offseason. Cano was on Fallon last night, so that’s an indicator of how seriously Yankee fans are taking this return.
  • Kyle Seager has been hot after starting the season in the basement. He was named co-player of the week for his impressive turnout last week where he netted 5 HRs, 11 RBIs and 1.459 OPS over 6 games. I’m not sure when this co-player of the week thing started, but he’s sharing it with Jose Abreu.
  • Newcomer Cole Gillespie didn’t wait around to make his first Mariners appearance last weekend against Texas. He was slotted into Dustin Ackley‘s left field slot twice over the weekend, and I fully expect to see him take a few more reps there in the coming weeks.
  • Abraham Almonte took Sunday off in his first benching of the season. The Mariners’ strikeout leader (36) has been troubled lately and even McClendon chimed in saying that Almonte’s April has been “not good.”
  • Despite failing to convert his last three starts, King Felix still leads the AL in strikeouts (47). Keep an eye out for him on Thursday when he gets the start at Yankee Stadium.
  • Hisashi Iwakuma update: I had initially predicted we would see Iwakuma in New York, but that’s not the case, keep an eye open for him in Houston this weekend though.
