The dominating starting pitching performances for the Mariners continue as Felix Hernandez nearly went the distance Saturday in the Mariners 3-1 win over the Oakland Athletics.

Felix pitched into the 9th allowing six hits and one earned run while walking one and striking out eight.

The offense was stymied in the early innings but broke loose against Oakland starter Dan Straily in the 5th with a 2-run homer from Dustin Ackley and a solo shot by Abraham Almonte two batters later.

That was all the offense Felix would need as he was didn’t falter even a little until the late innings. He gave up his only walk in the 8th and gave up a solo homer to Jed Lowrie to lead off the 9th, breaking up the shut out.

Felix exited with one out in the 9th with a runner at 2nd, opening the door for Fernando Rodney to get his first save as a Seattle Mariner striking out both batters he faced.

Seattle’s pitching staff has a 1.72 ERA through the first five games of the season. Take away Hector Noesi‘s boo boo and that lowers the staff ERA to 1.17 through the first 5 games. Both numbers are tops in the American League.

These same two teams will face each other again Sunday in a matinee game in Oakland. Friday’s rainout will be rescheduled as part of a double-header on one of Seattle’s return visits to Oakland this season. We had previously reported that the game had in fact already been scheduled for May. That info was premature and we apologize. Though, it may end up being accurate eventually.

First pitch Sunday is set for 1:05 PM PDT. Go Mariners!
