The Mariners made a statement Wednesday. That statement was delivered by James Paxton, who continued the opening week of solid pitching performances as the Mariners came within three outs of a shut out, but still won 8-2.

Paxton threw 7 scoreless innings of two hit ball, walking two and striking out nine. In the first three games of the year, Mariners starters have pitched 20 innings allowing 12 hits and 5 ER, walking three and striking out 26.

The offense continued their hot start as six Mariners each had two hits, led by Mike Zunino who his his first homer of the season and drove in three runs.

Stefen Romero collected his first big league hit, a single in the 4th. In addition to Zunino’s homer, Justin Smoak hit his 2nd of the season and Corey Hart hit his first.

The Mariners outscored the Angels 26-8 in the three games and sit atop the AL West at 3-0.

Cautious optimism is the phrase that pays for Mariners fans. The Mariners won two of their first three games in 2011, 2102 and 2013 only to have losing seasons in all three. However, the last time the Mariners started a season 3-0 was the “Refuse To Lose” 1995 season.

No rest for the weary as the Mariners now head up the coast to Oakland for a four-game series with the back-to-back AL West champion Athletics.
