Scott Baker looked good in his second audition for the 5th spot in the Mariners rotation and the offense used a late surge to defeat the Chicago White Sox 7-4 in Glendale Thursday.
Baker pitched the first three innings, allowing three hits and one run. He didn’t strike anyone out, but he didn’t walk anyone either.
Fernando Rodney made his Mariners debut in the 4th and gave up a run on two hits.
Down 4-2 in the top of the 7th, D.J. Peterson, Cole Gillespie and Jesus Montero each had RBI-singles to take a 5-4 lead. The M’s then added to the lead in the 9th with Stefen Romero and Gillespie again with RBIs. Zach Miner pitched a perfect 9th to seal the win for Seattle.
The other half of the M’s split-squad take the field Friday in Surprise against the Reds.
