The Seattle Mariners got off to another hot start and held serve on the mound, but two pitchers had a rough time and the Mariners lost their first game of the year, 6-3 to the Indians.
Leading 3-0 in the bottom of the 5th, Tom Wilhelmsen came into the game for the Mariners and gave up three runs (two earned) thanks to two hits, a walk and an error by Gabriel Noriega.
Then, with the game tied at 3-3 in the bottom of the 7th, this time it was Logan Bawcom who had a rough inning. David Adams led off the inning with a single. Then after getting Elliot Johnson to pop out and striking out Jesus Aguilar, Matt Carson singled and Francisco Lindor hit a 3-run homer to put the game away.
Seven other Mariners pitchers combined for six scoreless innings allowing only four hits and two walks.
The Mariners struck in the first when Robinson Cano grounded out to second allowing Abraham Almonte to score from third.
Then in the 3rd, Dustin Ackley continued his hot start to the spring with a two-run homer to center, scoring Corey Hart.
Seattle will now turn their attention to shaking off the first spring loss and getting ready for split-squad games against Colorado and Cincinnati on Monday. We will have split-squad rosters and lineups for the games tomorrow morning in “Mariners Gameday”.
We will, in the meantime, continue to monitor the possible trade market for Nick Franklin and give you updates as they come about.
