Carlos Peguero Designated For Assignment

We knew it was coming.

Well, we didn’t know it would be Peguero, but with the announcement coming Thursday that the Mariners had signed John Buck, we knew someone would be DFA to make room for him.

That man is Carlos Peguero.

Peguero is out of Triple-A options and would have had to make the big league club out of spring training, which given his play last year seemed unlikely.

Peguero has such raw power, it would be a shame to lose him. But I’m not sure it’s worth a roster spot to hope for that to come about.

There was also the obvious issue of his wife being charged with federal wire fraud for racking up over $150,000 charges on Felix Hernandez’s wife’s credit card. Her case is still pending.

The Mariners now have 10 days to trade, outright or release Peguero. I feel someone will claim him and a trade will get done. If they release him, he may go back to Japan as several NPB clubs have been showing interest in him.

I believe there has been some interest in Peguero in Japan,
they tend to like thumpers like him and Wily Mo. There are also two new teams
in Korea that are signing some “foreign” players. Peguero is also a good
athlete despite his size and not a major liability in the outfield. If he could
have improved his contract rate with off-speed offerings he could have stuck in
The Show. However, given his wife’s purported problem, it pretty much forced
    the team to move him.
