Right-handed pitcher Chance Ruffin was the 40-man roster victim of the Franklin Gutierrez signing as the Mariners designated him for assignment Wednesday.

Ruffin, 25 spent the majority of 2013 between Double-A Jackson and Triple-A Tacoma where he had a 3.91 ERA. In nine appearances with the big club last year, he struggled going 0-2 with an ERA of 8.38.

The Mariners now have 10 days to trade, release or reassign Ruffin, who was the player to be named later in the deal that sent Doug Fister to Detroit.

In other news, Travis Witherspoon, who was DFA to make room for Corey Hart, was outrighted to Tacoma.
