With all of the excitement of the Winter Meetings this past week, one little bit of news slipped past most people’s eyes. With the signing of Corey Hart, the Mariners needed to clear a spot on the roster, so they designated Travis Witherspoon for assignment.
The Mariners just claimed Witherspoon off waivers back in October.
Acquiring him was a low-risk move for the M’s given his down 2013 but potential for so much more.
Wasn' long ago that Witherspoon was considered a high-upside player in #Angels' system and was drawing comps to Cameron Maybin. Rough 2013.

The Mariners now have 10 days to:
- Place the him on waivers (which can only be done within the first 7 days of the 10-day period)
- Trade him
- Release him
- Outright him from the 40-man roster into the Minor Leagues
Not sure which of the options is most likely or viable at this point. Someone may want him via trade for the same reasons the M’s claimed him in the first place.
