MLB Winter Meetings: Rumors Swirling Early

The 2013 MLB Winter Meetings don’t officially begin until Monday morning, but the rumors are already swirling and the Seattle Mariners are right in the eye of the storm.

Several sources are confirming that the Mariners do intend to wheel and deal this week, many believe they will be the first to make a major move.

News that the Mariners are interested in David Price comes with glee and worry. The majority of the fan response I’ve seen, is that we don’t want Price if it means we lose Taijuan Walker.

Nelson Cruz is a name that many M’s fans have dreaded hearing because of his drug suspension in 2013. But he is good friends with newly-acquired Robinson Cano and that may play a role in bringing him in.

Joaquin Benoit would be a welcome addition to the back end of the Seattle bullpen. As for Corey Hart, I have been asking for him since I heard he had been cleared by his doctor as being fit for duty.

Three bats? We can assume two outfielders and a DH. Cruz or Shin-Soo Choo, Hart or Matt Kemp and then perhaps Kendrys Morales or Raul Ibanez.

Finally, we have this other tweet from Jon Heyman:

This would indicate that the Mariners are perhaps interested in dealing Dustin Ackley instead of Nick Franklin and moving Franklin to shortstop, possibly moving Brad Miller as well.

Remember, Franklin initially came up as a shortstop. And with the signing of utility man Willie Bloomquist, there is no need to keep even two of the three (Miller, Franklin and Ackley) so seeing them move two of them would make sense.

That’s all for tonight. Breaking news as it happens.

Please Jack do NOT trade Nick Franklin, or Walker.

    • JJ Allen Keller

      Where would you play Franklin?

      • Mr Right Brain

Shortstop, OF I don’t care. He’s an elite athlete and he’s going to be an All Star.

Again I would ask for some evidence. Regardless though if you put him at SS, where does Miller go? I think most assume he is the better player, at least at SS where Franklin probably cant hack it. In the outfield, there is no way his bat plays enough to be an all star.

Truth is he cant hit lefties, strikes out a lot, doesn’t have a ton of power, doesn’t walk an overwhelming amount (though he probably does walk “enough”) and doesnt seem to play that good of defense anywhere.

I’d rather keep Miller over Franklin, but yeah, Ackley would be an unlikely option to keep at this point

Ackley and Franklin are gone. Miller is the one we need to keep! Hopefully Saunders can be worked into a deal…a number of teams are looking for a cheaper decent club controlled OF LHB.

We have the money to replace entire OF and fill in:

    LF Kemp
    RF Choo
    CF Gutz & Almonte

RF/1B Corey Hart ( I actually like this a LOT): This allows Smoak to sit against LHPing & put Hart at 1B during LHP and OF against RHP.

I also would be hounding hounding and hounding Brewers & Florida to see just how “unavailable” Braun and Stanton actually are. “If” by chance you can land one of them that’s a no brainer!

I like the rumors on Axford and Benoit and Belfour for additions to our BP.

And Price, Tanaka, and Colon would all be welcomed. “Price” if all the above can get done.

I would not trade for Price period. I would not trade Ackley unless there was a valuable return, he can play in the OF okay. They should bid on Tanaka when he’s posted, with only a $20M posting fee not counting towards luxury tax bill the M’s have the payroll space to outbid anyone, including the Yankees, Rangers and Angels. Unless they get a decent return (Gardner?) I’d just stash Franklin in Tacoma. I’d sign one of Morse or Ibanez as a bench bat and Guti on an incentive based contract. We are about to find out how smart Z is in the next few days or weeks.

We need to extract maximum value for Franklin or send him back to Tacoma to play shortstop in 2014. I don’t think we’re certain Brad Miller is the answer at shortstop himself, as much as we want to be. Keeping Franklin around gives us an option.
