More Free Agents?

Rest assured Mariners fans, the M’s are not done. There is no way they sat Robinson Cano down and convinced him to sign with the understanding that he was THE one they were signing and then they were done.

The Mariners are looking to add at least one more bat, probably two (one outfielder and one DH). So who’s left?

Nelson Cruz and Shin-Soo Choo are the names that have been tossed around most often. We’ve talked in great detail about them. What about some others?

Chris Coghlan- The recently non-tendered Coghlan was the 2009 NL Rookie of the Year. The Marlins hope to keep him, but non-tendered him in order to negotiate a cheaper deal. He may not be an ideal fit for the M’s but he’s out there and could be a low-risk/high-reward player if he can regain his 2009 form.

Corey Hart- The two-time All-Star would be a cheaper option to signing Cruz or Choo and may end up producing more. He is capable of 30+ homers and 90+RBI per year. He would fit well as either a No. 3 hitter ahead of Cano or in the 5-hole after Cano. Plus, he can play 1B too, giving Justin Smoak days off at first.

Other options include Reed Johnson, Sam Fuld, Rajai Davis and of course, bringing back Franklin Gutierrez.

    Is Hart healthy?

  • Sodo Mojo

Yes Hart is healthy and ready to go. I posted a link to an article that talked about it but it disappeared (at least I’m not seeing it now). Hart has been cleared by his doctor for full duty.

To me, if the idea is winning during Cano’s best years, then you keep Walker at the discounted price for 6 years, rather than the 2 years of Price at a comparably high price that could be spent elsewhere (ie Colon).

The most simple way to put it is that Seattle has a bad reputation with free agents because of the pitcher’s park perception, though they were near the top of power numbers in 2013, so other than Cano, try to sign free agent pitchers, and use your assets to trade for bats. I don’t want those assets to be Walker or Paxton though, that could have been the case before the Hultzen injuries.

Don’t trade Walker. Fire GMZ for falsifying his reseume
