Tigers hitting coach Lloyd McClendon was in Seattle Sunday interviewing with Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik for a second time according to Greg Johns of MLB.com. CBSSports.com is also reporting that A’s bench coach Chip Hale is getting a second interview as well.

Joey Cora is the only other candidate publicly known to have received a second interview for the Mariners manager position.

McClendon is the only one of the first-round of candidates to have prior MLB managerial experience.

Brad Ausmus was thought to have been in the list of finalists for the position, but the Detroit Tigers hired him Sunday. This leaves the M’s job and the Chicago Cubs’ as the only vacant posts left.

The organization should be hiring a new skipper soon if they wish to draw top-line free agents to the town. Many times a free agent will be reluctant to sign with a team where the future is so uncertain. Regardless of who they hire, the only thing certain is the uncertainty of the future. It will be a challenge to bring in the top names regardless of who the M’s hire.

Stay tuned.
