Welcome back Mariners faithful. I am back with Part 4 of my Five-part series: GM For a Day. Where I take a look at how I would fix the Seattle Mariners with five moves if I were given GM powers for 24 hours.

Before we get into Part 4, let me quickly remind those of you just joining us what the first three steps were.

Step 1: Shake Up the Minor Leagues

In part one, I suggested as many of you have over the years, that the Mariners organization has a flaw in its player-development. To remedy this, I suggested letting go of Chris Gwynn as the Director of Player Development and hiring Dan Wilson to replace him.

Dan – I really like the McCann signing too. The more I think of it it’s a no-brainer, because it allows Morales (if re-signed) to play 1B against LHPs and have Smoak sit with Zunino at C and McCann at DH (against LHPs). THen McCann splitting 50/50 time with Zunino, which should give McCann at least 75%+ playing time!

I have VERY mixed feelings about signing Ibanez. “If” we could land Morales AND McCann we don’t need him. I DO NOT WANT HIM IN THE OF! But PH & periodic DH off of bench I’m fine with.

You mentioned solidifying Ackley in LF, but I favor packaging Franklin & Walker +++ for Stanton, and running with Ackley at 2B with Miller at SS. And still going after hard for Ellsbury, and trading for Brewers Braun (since he’s on the block).

We’d have pitching to sign, but at the moment with ONLY $32.5m committed for 2014 the above moves are surely doable.

I agree. I would like to see Ackley at 2nd. He didn’t commit an error in 53 games there this year. But I feel like the team is committed to Franklin and his Little League looking helmet. So, Ackley in left would keep Ibanez off the field or off the team even. We still have enough to package to get Stanton and Braun if that is desired. Then let Jack restock the minors while this team makes a run at some playoff games. It could happen.

Do you really think we have enough for Stanton and Braun? I think one of the other is all we could do. Both would command Walker plus, so I dont see bringing in both as a possibility. Plus Stanton isnt really on the table any more.
