Rick Renteria Interviews For Mariners

We reported yesterday that A’s bench coach Chip Hale was among the first to interview with Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik for their managerial opening. We can now add Padres bench coach Rick Renteria to the list of those known to have interviewed according to Greg Johns of MLB.com.

According the the report, the Mariners are also considering Padres special assistant Brad Ausmus.

I would rather have Renteria given a choice of those two. Renteria has more coaching experience. He managed Mexico in the 2013 World Baseball Classic. He spent four seasons managing Class-A Lake Elsinore in the Padres organization and another year as the Portland Beavers (Triple-A) skipper.

As an Oregon resident and former Portland Beaver fan (they no longer exist), I am now torn between the idea of having Renteria run the M’s or Chip Hale (who used to play in Portland).

Renteria has also interviewed for the Cubs’ opening.

The M’s are thought to have a list of as many as 20 names of potential managers. That list obviously includes Hale and Renteria, but also former Reds manager Pete Mackanin, Red Sox bench coach Torey Lovullo, Giants coach Ron Wotus and Tigers hitting coach Lloyd McClendon.
