MLB Draft: M's Choose Tyler O'Neill in the 3rd Round

Tyler O’Neill

Catcher/Outfielder  from Garibaldi Secondary School in Maple Ridge, British Columbia

20 years old

Bats/ Throws R/R

5’11” 205 pounds

Brief Notes:

O’Neill is has been a catcher, but the Mariners drafted him as a right fielder. He is well built and possesses good power potential. He also has some good athleticism demonstrated by the fact that he has spent some time at shortstop. It appears that he has the natural ability to play outfield with some practice, and his bat has enough power to profile just fine there. At the high school level, he has hit for a high average, but he could go through some growing pains as he adjusts to professional pitching. One thing that could set O’Neill is his bulldog mentality on the field. Interesting pick, but I can see it paying off, although O’Neill certainly won’t be rushed through the system. Don’t expect him to advance any farther than short season Everett this year.
