MLB Draft: Mariners Pick Austin Wilson In Second Round

Austin Wilson

21 years old

Bats/ Throws L/R

6’5” 245 pounds

College Stats: .288/.387/.475, 7 doubles, 5 homeruns, 26 rbis. (31 games)

Brief Thoughts:

I love this pick. Prior to the year, Wilson was in the running for Seattle’s first round selection. Instead, we got him in the second round. Wilson has the potential to be a true right fielder on the defensive side of the ball, and his bat profiles well there. In a Mariner organization that doesn’t have many promising outfielders, Wilson could move quickly and be an impact player on both offense and defense in a hurry. Assuming that his minor injury is not a long-term concern, I would say that Seattle got a steal with Wilson.

There is much more to come on Wilson and the following Mariner selections here at Sodo Mojo.

I’m guessing he expected to go higher, he might be tough to sign without some creative incentivizing. He could do an Appel and go back to Stanford for his senior year. His slot is worth $1.1MM, he might want close to $2MM.
