Jesus Montero may be suspended

The front page of ESPN at 6:00 PM PT this evening is rather ominous. It features a split picture of noted steroid users Ryan Braun and Alex Rodriguez and the headline “Clinical Problems.” According to an Outside the Lines report, Major League Baseball is looking to suspend players connected to a Miami-area PED clinic called BioGenesis.

One of those players linked to the clinic is Jesus Montero.

Now we knew this preseason, but what we didn’t know was that MLB wasnted to suspend those linked to the clinic. Some of the players on the list have been suspended before or are known users. That includes Padres catcher Yasmani Grandal and Blue Jays outfielder Melky Cabrera. Montero happens to be on the list of names that includes users like these guys.

Whether or not Jesus gets suspended, the real question is should we care? Montero is already out until the all-star break with a torn meniscus, and his effectiveness has been limited when he’s healthy. Maybe what he needs is a little time off to reassess his career.

Clearly, he’s not associating with the kind of people who will help him succeed. Even if he’s on PEDs, they clearly aren’t helping him too much. Maybe a nice 50-gamer would help him evaluate his future and realize that he’s running out of chances at the major league level.
