Top Pitching Prospect All Sent Down

It seems that the future isn’t quite here for the trio of young stud pitchers in the Mariners organization. James Paxton, Danny Hultzen and Taijuan Walker were all reassigned to minor league camp.

This move is not a surprise. None of the group was ever expected to make the team out of Spring training. I am a little surprised at how early Paxton and Hultzen were send down, since both are expected to be called up at some point in this season. The problem is that the Mariners have many options for the 5 rotation spots, and need to innings for the other pitchers.

It’s also worth noting that Erasmo Ramirez was not sent down with the others. It would seem that Ramirez is in the hunt for the final spot in the rotation. Ramirez does not have the high ceiling that the other 3 pitchers have, but he spent a good part of 2011 in AAA, so he is further along in the developmental process.

Those pitchers still vying for a spot in the rotation include

  • Felix Hernandez
  • Jason Vargas
  • Kevin Milwood
  • Blake Bevan
  • Charlie Furbush
  • Hiashi Iwakuma
  • Hector Noeshi
  • Erasmo Ramirez

These were the right moves at this point in time. It will interesting to see who ends up at the different minors levels. Jackson and Tacoma should be looking good this year. Where Walker ends up will be informative as it will give some indication of how the team plans to move him along. Erasmo not going down is also interesting. Iwakuma and Millwood need to step up their game if they want a rotation spot.  Right now I’d put Ramirez, Noesi and Beavan ahead of them.
