Wilson to DL, Laffey Claimed, Ackley Out

A few noteworthy things happening in Mariners Universe today.

Jack Wilson has landed on the DL, which isn’t a huge shock since they should rename the list in his honor. However, it couldn’t have come at a worse time. With Chone Figgins and Brendan Ryan both being on the DL, Wilson has been playing every day for the first time since the second base experiment went awry.

With that playing time, Wilson had been productive. In his 11 August games, he was hitting .325/.357/.450 with five doubles. It’s not like any of this was susptainable given who he is and his .433 BABIP during that time, but a glimmer of hope to off-load his contract to a contender that could use a capable shortstop has now been dashed.

Taking his spot on the roster is Brendan Ryan. He’s not ready to play yet so it may be a few days before we see him.

Aaron Laffey was claimed by the New York Yankees today. He’ll be in their bullpen immediately. Sweet for him, but I have a sneaky feeling he still won’t be playing come October.

Dustin Ackley is out of the lineup tonight. No word on the reason yet, but the spike mark in his hand probably has something to do with it. I’d imagine he gets a day or two if it’s bruised and be right back in there sometime soon.

Speaking of Figgins, he took grounders at third and Ryan took BP. Please, Gutierrez, help the two-hole retain production by staying hot.

Series preview is in the post below. Ciao!
