Well, last night was the last time we’re going to be seeing Justin Smoak for a while. He’s headed to the DL with a broken nose and a broken maxilla bone in his left cheek. He was injured in last night’s game when a very hard hit grounder took a nasty hop and struck him in the face.
Replacing him on the roster is Wily Mo Pena, who will DH, while Mike Carp will fill in for Smoak at first base. Pena was signed about 2 weeks ago, and it was expected that he would become Seattle’s DH at some point in the next few days.
Pena played in 12 games for AAA Tacoma and posted and wOBA of .482 and already had 4 home runes. The 29 year old is hardly a prospect of any kind so his skills are well known. He will hit plenty of very very long home runs. He will also strike out a lot.
