Nothing exciting has happened, but there have been a couple roster moves made today:
- Ryan Langerhans was traded to Arizona for cash considerations. This was done to clear up space on the 40-man roster for Wily Mo Pena.
- Just Cust was designated for assignment. This was done to clear room on the 25 man roster so that Erik Bedard could be activated off the disabled list. Bedard will start in tonight’s game.
This leaves the Mariners with 39 men on the 40 man roster, as DFAing Cust also removed him from the 40-man roster. This left me wondering why the need for the Langerhans trade at all, as the Cust move would have taken care of both roster problems, but clearly Langerhans had no future in Seattle. Perhaps it was just a chance to get anything for the outfielder, even if it was just cash.
These moves also left the Mariners with 6 starters in their rotation. I had expected Blake Beavan to be optioned, but doing so would mean he must stay in Tacoma in 10 days. With the trading deadline just 2 days from now, and Bedard likely to be traded after tonight’s start, I think the Mariners wanted to keep him around instead of being without him for a couple weeks. Hopefully they use the extra arm to begin lightening the workload for Michael Pineda.
