Mariners Sign Blast From Past

This may come as old news to some of you but while I was messing around with Baseball America’s website I came across some of the minor league transactions only to discover that the Mariners have signed Tony Butler, the same Tony Butler who was one of the pieces traded by the Mariners just 3 short years ago to Baltimore in exchange for Erik Bedard.

He has yet to pitch above single A level as member of not just the Orioles organization but also with the Brewers last year. He’s run into a bevy of injuries with his arm and back. So it’s hard to say if anything will come of it. But it kind of feels like a minor victory in a way to have him back in the organization even if he’s only a shadow of his former self.

He’s taken some time off so hopefully he’s healthy. Still only 23, he maybe a little old for Low-A/High-A if he can get healthy he could still do something. What that something is … I have no idea.

It’ll be interesting to see if anything comes of this.

I guess this makes the Bedard trade a little more even, not a lot. Every little bit helps after the past few years. He has been impressive this year though.
