Catcher Adam Moore was injured in today’s game, and had to be helped off the field. Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times reported that he had difficulty even getting his socks off once in the clubhouse. Apparently he hurt his knee when he planted his foot in the grass, and was limping badly after the game.
Normally, I would expect a roster move, with Moore headed to the 15 day DL and Josh Bard being brought up to be the backup catcher, but there is some difficulty there. The Mariners do not have another catcher on the 40-man roster, so bringing up a replacement would also meaning putting Tui or another player on waivers.
Since tomorrow is an off day, I’d expect the M’s to wait until Friday morning before announcing anything. They can wait and see the results to tomorrow’s MRI and see if Moore recovers enough that they might risk playing a game or two without a true backup catcher while Moore recovers.
The M’s emergency catcher is backup infielder Adam Kennedy, who has never appeared in a game at the position.
