Roster Breakdown: Week 3

facebooktwitterreddit

Cuts have started and so there’s been lots of movement this week.

Outfield: 5 Roster spots available

LocksIchiro, Gutierrez, Bradley
On the bubbleSaunders,
Work left to doGross, Langerhans, Wilson, Halman
OutGerut (retired), Peguero, Chavez
Comments: I moved Bradley up to being a lock. He has done nothing this spring to make anyone think about cutting him. Saunders on the other hand, has had his stance changed which makes me think he may be headed to AAA to start the year until he can work out the kinks. Also, Halman wasn’t included in the cuts that sent the other minor leaguers back down, something I find quite interesting.

Infield: 5 Roster spots available

LocksSmoak, Ryan, Jack Wilson, Figgins
On the bubbleKennedy
Work left to doTuiasosopo, Mangini, Josh Wilson, Carp, Kazmar, Rodriquez, Ackley
OutLiddi
Comments: This is still a tough battle to handicap. (I’ve said that every time so far.) No movement except the obvious Liddi cut. Kennedy isn’t hitting all that well, so even though it’s assumed he’ll make the squad there’s a chance he wont and Kazmar will get the nod. The only other people I think who have a shot would be Carp or Tui, who’ll fit in as a 5th outfielder as well.

Catcher/DH: 3 Roster spots available

LocksCust, Olivo
On the bubbleMoore, Bard
Work left to doBaron, Gimenez
Out
Comments:  Olivo should be ready for opening day, or so he says. Other than that there’s really no change.

Rotation: 5 Roster spots available

LocksFelix, Vargus, Fister, Bedard
On the bubbleFrench
Work left to doPineda, Pauley
OutPaxton, Beavan, Robertson (elbow)
Comments: The Rotation is taking shape already. Bedard is in, which is a huge surprise to me, though a pleasant one. The 5th spot is what’s up for grabs still. French looks like the frontrunner with Pauley being looked at more as a bullpen arm. Pineda is still an option, but I still believe he starts in Tacoma.

Bullpen: 7 Roster spots available

LocksLeague
On the bubbleAardsma, Lueke, Ray, Delcarmen, Cortez
Work left to doOlson, Jimenez, Wright, Bautista, Haeger, Miller, Smith, Flores, Wilhelmsen, Castro, Paredes, Ring
OutKelley (60 day DL), Robles, Medina, Petit, Roe, Seddon
Comments: Very little is set here. Robles getting cut surprised me, as I though he had a chance at the roster. Only League’s spot is set.
