Lopez, Bedard, Branyan’s Options Declined

Unsurprisingly, the Mariners decided today to decline the 2011 options of Jose Lopez ($4.5 million), Erik Bedard ($8 million), and Russell Branyan ($5 million). Jose Lopez remains under team control for now, but probably not for real long.

As for Bedard and Branyan, well, Bedard didn’t pitch in 2010, and it just doesn’t make sense to spend $5 million on a guy like Branyan when you probably aren’t going to contend, and especially when you have Justin Smoak, Milton Bradley, and Casey Kotchman all still on the roster. Now, if one or more of those guys disappear, there’s always the slim chance Branyan will be back on a cheaper deal, but it’s not exactly likely.
