According to tweets from 710 ESPN Seattle’s Shannon Drayer and Sports Illustrated’s Jon Heyman, the Mariners will name Eric Wedge their next field manager.
It’s hard to really say what this means, as we don’t really have any tools that will tell us a good manager from a bad one, but my initial reaction is that I like the hire. I know nothing of his ability to motivate players, and we’ve all heard about the Milton Bradley t-shirt incident with Wedge, but I like Wedge’s personality.
That’s really what it boils down to for me. I think he’ll be entertaining to watch and show a bit of anger when situations call for it.
As for the numbers, he has a 561-573 record (.495 winning percentage) and came one game away from reaching the World Series with Cleveland in 2007. His Indians also finished in 1st place that year, which hey, is one more time than Bobby Valentine finished in 1st place.
So, unless Wedge turns down the Mariners’ job, expect to see the M’s introduce Wedge sometime within the next week.
