Fun Facts From the 2009 Season.

Posted by: Taylor
While I was reflecting on the 2009 season, I discovered these little interesting tidbits.
  • Mariano Rivera is a career .667 hitter.
  • JJ Putz posted a 2.67 FIP in 2007.  David Aardsma posted a 4.29 FIP in 2007.  JJ Putz posted a 4.19 FIP in 2009.  David Aardsma posted a 3.01 FIP in 2009.  JJ Putz cost the Mets Mike Carp and Jason Vargas, and the Indians Franklin Gutierrez.  David Aardsma cost the Mariners nothing.
  • Raul Ibanez had an 8.0 UZR this year.
  • Ricky Nolasco had a 5.06 ERA but a 4.11 tRA in 2009.  Let’s hope the Marlins only noticed the former.
  • Chone Figgins and Nyjer Morgan were each caught stealing 17 times.
  • Jose Lopez grounded into 25 double plays.
  • Chase Utley led the majors by being hit by a pitch 24 times.  All I can say is, “ouch.”
  • Mike Pelfrey had 6 balks and intentionally walked a MLB-leading 8 batters.
  • Tim Lincecum gave up only 168 hits in 225.1 innings.  That’s a 6.72 H/9 value.
  • Doug Davis walked 76 more batters (103) than Joel Piniero (27) in 10.2 less innings.
            BallHype: hype it up!

“Tim Lincecum gave up only 168 hits in 225.1 innings.”

Apparently he takes more hits than he gives up.

“Raul Ibanez had an 8.0 UZR this year.”

The poster boy for why UZR isn’t all that good with just single-season samples.

“Jose Lopez grounded into 25 double plays.”

Everyone forgets this. He’s not a great hitter. And hey, the White Sox have an opening at 2B. Sell high, Jack.

“JJ Putz cost the Mets Mike Carp and Jason Vargas, and the Indians Franklin Gutierrez. David Aardsma cost the Mariners nothing.”

Well, technically it was Luis Valbuena who cost the Indians Franklin Gutierrez but I see your point.

This analysis was meant to be implicit, but I’m happy to see we’re on the same page.
